HopStop by Amaurys

If you use public transit, HopStop is the app for you. Yeah, you can get walking and public transit directions from Google Maps but for reason, I feel as if HopStop does it better. I was recently in New York a couple of weeks ago. I lived there growing up but never got used to taking the trains there. I had to take a trip from Queens to Manhattan one day and didn’t know how. I used Google Maps of course but it would give me basic directions. HopStop instead gives you the same directions with more details. It’ll tell you what side of the street to take the train, how many stops before you get off and where to walk after you get off the subway platform. Best part? It’s free. It doesn’t only work in NY either, surprisingly they have Providence, RI on there as well. Check the app out and see if your city is listed. It’s simple and easy to use. You’ll love it.

Dead Trigger by Jordan

If you’re like me, and you’re slightly disappointed that Call of Duty Zombies hasn’t been ported over to Android from iOS yet, you’ve probably been looking for the best available alternative. In the past week, that alternative was released. Dead Trigger places you in a first person shooter following the main guidelines of games like Contract Killer and other first person shooters that Gameloft made. While developed by Madfinger, it follows the same outlines; select a mission, complete said mission, and upgrade your weapons. While it isn’t exactly Nazi Zombies-esque in the thought that you start clean every game, can unlock extra guns throughout a match, and is wave-based, Dead Trigger is beginning to move the zombie FPS category that Android has been lacking into an area that developers will surely want to compete in. Dead Trigger is available on Google Play for only $0.99.

Google Currents by Atenedoro

The first thing that peaks my brain when I wake up each morning is “did anything new get released overnight”? Normally this wouldn’t be an issue, but we all remember how the Galaxy S III was announced at midnight right?

Well that’s where Google Currents comes in. The UI has been much improved over the last few versions, and at Google I/O it became much, much more responsive. It now replaces Pulse for me. I keep all of my favourite feeds available and up to date, so all I need to do in the morning is pull out the old tablet with my cup of joe and read. Who needs a newspaper in the world of tech these days?

Avast AV by Dann

I tried this out the other day and it’s nice. I’m not thrilled as you can see. The firewall feature is neat but there are better apps out there for it. I didn’t feel warm fuzzies from their AV performance either but my concern is more about sd contents than actual OS.

I’ll pick Bitdefender over it but it does have one thing I prefer; no need to sign in for use.

TED by Chance

TED has to be one of my favorite Android apps. The official app presents talks from some of the world’s most fascinating people: education radicals, tech geniuses, medical mavericks, business gurus and music legends. TED is 100% free and has enough content to watch for a very long time. The entire library is available for browsing and searching in both online and offline modes. Bookmark or download your favorite TED Talk for playback anywhere.

While our iOS counterparts brag about Flipboard, we have Google Currents. This app allows you to view your news in a beautiful magazine-like way.  Currents has many built-in publishers, including Forbes, Techcrunch, Saveur, Popular Science, Good, 500px, and Fast Company. You can also add any other website you want, by using the site’s RSS feed. Or, you can import your existing Google Reader feeds. All news sources are also available for offline reading for when you are away from WiFi or 3G/4G. Lastly, Currents allows you to easily share the story you reading on Twitter, Facebook, and more.
